Hulu.com shifted the way many people watched TV.
After its launch, however, a lot of additional features were bolted onto the original design, and the product started to suffer from its own complexity.
This lack of focus manifested itself in cluttered information design, where text metadata started overtaking visual imagery on the site.
At the same time, some key things were missing.
For example, someone that was logged in saw the same content offerings as an anonymous user.
Hulu.com v2 (internally nicknamed H20) was redesigned with the purpose of delivering a more personalized experience for its customers and improving content discovery.
From the homepage, it is easy to resume watching your favorite shows or scroll to find more things you might like.
As the lead designer for this project, I worked on the core UX patterns and page layouts, including the home page, browse pages, show page, video page, and search experience.
As you browse the site, the focus on visual imagery is consistently carried through.
A modular and responsive grid system provides a great experience no matter what size your browser is stretched, and the use of re-usable, extensible design components enables the site to evolve gracefully as new features are added over time.
